France was the first country where the veterinary studies have become institutionalized through the establishment of the first veterinary schools in the eighteenth century. Veterinary science is vital to the study and protection of livestock, herd health and monitoring the spread of disease. It requires the acquisition and application of scientific knowledge in multiple areas and the use of technical skills in disease prevention that can affect both pets as wild animals. In France, the National Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products (ANMV) within ANSES (National Agency for the safety of the food, the environment and labor) is the competent authority for assessment and risk management for veterinary medicinal products. The government wish, for this reason, that the ANMV would take part of the continuous dynamic of improvement for protecting human and animal health. Two points called the attention of the industries and the pharmaceutical-Health-Veterinary community this year: The Parasiticides products and diagnostics new technologies.

I/ Parasiticides

Over the years, the demand for animal parasiticides has increased significantly owing to the growing awareness about zoonotic diseases; implementation of animal welfare acts in developed countries; growing investment activities from governments, non-government agencies and major market players; increase in the population of livestock animals and an upsurge in the animal welfare awareness leading to the worldwide adoption of companion animals such as cats and dogs. However, stringent regulations for approval of animal parasiticides, expensive and time consuming R&D activities to develop a new product, restrictions on the use of parasiticides in food producing animals in some countries, emerging species of parasitic diseases are restraining the growth of the animal parasiticides market.

Europe is a major market for global animal parasiticides with a share of around 25% to 30% of the global market in 2013, followed by North America and Asia-Pacific. A majority of the growth in the market is expected to be from the emerging market in the Asia-Pacific and Latin America regions, owing to an increasing livestock and companion animals’ population, growing awareness about animal health among animal owners, and improving animal healthcare infrastructure in these regions. These market across developing countries such as India and China is slated to show a significant growth during the forecast period of 2013 to 2018.

Some major players in the Animal Parasiticides Market are Merial (Sanofi) (France), Ceva Sante Animlae (France), Virbac SA (France), Vetoquinol (France), Bayer AG (Germany), Boehringer Ingelheim (Germany), Zoetis, Inc. (U.S.), Merck & Co., Inc. (U.S.), Eli Lilly and Company (U.S.) and Novartis AG (Switzerland), among others. As we can observe, France plays an important role in this market.

II/ Diagnostics

Veterinary diagnostics tests are carried out for the detection of various diseases in animals. These procedures are executed through various methods that use blood, feces, and tissue samples from animals. The global veterinary diagnostics market has seen a paradigm shift in the past decade with the emergence of a number of new and technologically advanced products, which had a positive impact on the overall growth of the market. The market has seen many new technologies from the human diagnostics segment being adapted into the veterinary diagnostics segment. This trend still continues and with the human diagnostics getting cheaper, their application into the veterinary segment is expected to grow further.

Like in the human pharmaceuticals market, the field of  immunology represent the highest growth. The market has a high growth potential mainly due to (1) the increasing incidences of animal disease outbreaks, (2) increasing number of both companion animals and food producing animals globally, and (3) rising public awareness about animal diseases. However, the economic downturn and increasing adoption of vegetarian food appear to dampen the overall market growth to a certain extent. The emerging markets across the Asia-Pacific and Latin American regions are becoming the growth centers for the global market. This market across developing countries such as India and China is slated to show a significant growth during the forecast period of 2015 to 2018. The growing demand for veterinary diagnostics product in this region is mainly due to the rise in the number of companion animals due to the growing urbanization, along with the increase in the per capita income which leads to greater spending on the overall animal health. North America contributes to the largest share to the global veterinary diagnostics market, followed by Europe and Asia-Pacific.

The major players in the veterinary diagnostics market include IDEXX Laboratories (U.S.), VCA Antech Inc. (U.S.), Abaxis Corporation (U.S.), Heska Corporation (U.S.), Zoetis Inc. (U.S.), Neogen Corporation (U.S.), and Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. (U.S.) and Mindray Medical (China).

The companion animal ownership has grown over the years as well as the number of livestock animals in developing countries is on the rise. Today, companion animal owners are willing to spend extra on animal health. This, along with the growing animal health awareness and adoption of the companion animals is driving the growth of the overall market.
